Understanding Weight
Loss
Understanding
the Diet / Weight Loss
Equation
The relationship
between diet and weight loss is a complex one, to say the
least. At best it can be described as perplexing, especially
when some people go on the strictest of diets and actually gain
weight, other people go on diets and remain the same weight and
still others go on diets and it works a treat. There seems to
be a lot of discussion and controversy around what components
are contained in the diet / weight loss equation. One thing
that sticks out more than others is the fact that no one
formula suits everyone. There just does not seem to be a ‘one
size fits all answer’.
This phenomenon is due
to the fact that we all have different levels of physical
fitness, and therefore different levels of cardio vascular
rate, metabolism and self discipline. Once one understands this
it then becomes apparent that the ability to lose weight, and
then maintain a steady body weight relies on a combination of
all of these factors. Each of them must be maintained in the
correct proportions to prevent an imbalance occurring in any
one area
An example of imbalance
would be when people go on water only diets, lose weight fast
but do not sustain their dietary needs, The result, of course,
then becomes apparent in loss of strength, immune system
deficits and other health issues arising from being overly
focused on one aspect of health whilst ignoring other
ones
Every aspect of our
health is important. The human can be compared to a very
complex machine, where all parts must be maintained properly in
order to function correctly. Each part is dependent on its
neighbor to remain healthy. This cannot be overstressed,
especially when it comes to weight gain and weight
loss.
How one goes about
resolving the issue of shedding excess weight will depend on
the individual. Time, money, focus and determination all play a
big part in determining how successful you may or may not be in
achieving your goals. This too, is another, whole separate
issue. Your goal, to lose weight must be realistic. You must
realize that to lose too much too soon can be extremely
dangerous, and in some cases the effects can be
irreversible.
Ideally you should be
aiming to see small degrees of progress, over time, and be
setting your self up for long term success, as opposed to short
term success but longer term failure. This means setting out a
plan, one which encompasses each aspect of maintaining a
healthy lifestyle, whilst still achieving the goal of losing
weight.
This usually includes a
balance in the following areas of
life:
Diet
Exercise
Rest
Sleep
Possibly some
counseling.
For those people who
are unable to accept the fact that correct diet and correct
exercise go hand in hand when achieving sustainable weight loss
then the option of counseling is strongly
suggested.
