Surgical Weight Loss
Out of all the possible ways to decrease
either body size, or weight, surgical weight loss has to be
considered a last resort. Unfortunately though, for some
people, it is the only option. This is because of medical
reasons and has nothing to do with the ability, of people in
this category, to succeed using traditional dieting
methods.
If at all possible success in the
pursuit of losing weight, using options aside from surgical
weight loss, should be seriously considered. This is because
virtually ALL weight loss surgery is NON –
REVERSIBLE!

Surgical weight loss is not only
undesirable (in most cases) but can also be very dangerous. It
is a procedure in which the recipient, of the surgery, has fat
tissue removed whilst under a general anesthetic. This means
scarring wherever the surgery is performed and may result in
very long scars on legs, arms stomachs etc. Therefore being
hospitalized, for as long as necessary until recovery is
complete, is also part of the requirements. Not only that but,
because surgical weight loss is usually classed as “elective”
(non - necessary) surgery it is usually VERY
expensive.
Other dangers become apparent, once a
person begins to consider all that is involved, with this type
of treatment. Imagine the delicacy with which the surgery needs
to be performed. One slip of the surgeons knife and you could
suffer permanent nerve damage, muscle tissue damage or a myriad
of other, often unknown effects.
The treatment has no long term
guarantees of success. This means you may, or may not, weigh
less twelve months after the surgery. Sustained stability of
body weight is dependent on eating habits, exercise routines
and lifestyle.
The surgery itself is usually only
performed on people who's life is being put in jeopardy, due to
excessive fat, and who would not otherwise live very long if
the surgery was not performed. Even then, surgeons willing to
perform the surgery, with enough experience, need to be found.
Not only that but there is also the follow up, after care, and
the network of supports you need, in order to achieve permanent
weight loss using this method.
In order for a person to maintain a
stable and healthy weight, after surgery, intensive therapy is
needed. This will usually involve attending weekly, sometimes
daily sessions. Usual practices are to instruct the patient to
keep food intake journals, be on a strict diet and get
exercise. These are also standard components for any weight
loss program but are particularly important for persons who
have undergone weight loss surgery.
On the whole we think weight loss
surgery should be avoided at all costs. There are many healthy
ways to lose weight, lose excessive skin caused by excessive
weight loss and also many support programs out there to
assist.
We recommend trying other, safe
methods FIRST, before even considering weight loss surgery. In
